Skillet.

:D

Who is the better band: Skillet, Petra, Five Iron Frenzy, Eleventyseven, or Newsboys?

Before I start, I'll admit that I've been a Five Iron Frenzy fan for years, and my answer may carry some bias. I'm not here to convert other fans to Five Iron Frenzy, but am simply stating my honest opinion.

Of the bands listed, I prefer Five Iron Frenzy based on:

Lyrical content - Reese Roper(lead vocals) is the primary lyricist for the band, and I love his poetic style.

examples:

On Distant Shores - a song about failing on your own, and the renewing strength of Christ. http://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/Five-Ir...

World Without End - about God, and our ability to have a relationship with him.

Superpowers - an example of a silly song, driven by not so silly ideas.

Five Iron Frenzy has written their share of goofy, funny songs, but they also have a serious side. I've found that some songs are entirely serious, perhaps even gloomy or sorrowful(Spartan, New Year's Eve), while other songs are either a mix(Superpowers, I Feel Lucky) or silly in their entirety(Oh Canada, You Probably Shouldn't Move Here). The lyrics are intelligent, poetic, and sometimes require a bit of thought or interpretation, which I prefer.

Musical ability - The band's discography includes many well written songs. Some example include:

from the early days - A Flowery Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQTyjatRw...

Every New Day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRsJ3YcLK...

mid career - All that is Good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKhjlLA0U...

late career -

See the Flames Begin to Crawl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVK_uRik9...

On Distant Shores http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI3ItBRos...

There is not really a "weak link" musician in the band, as all are adept at their own instruments. The guitar, drums, horn section, and vocals that comprise Five Iron Frenzy are all exceptional.

Their stage presence/band personality

The band was known for their live performances, and dressing up on stage. They exhibit a sense of humor on stage, and are well known for their goofiness and how they don't seem to take themselves too seriously.

This isn't to say that the other listed bands aren't talented in their own ways. I saw Petra perform on their farewell tour and was completely blown away. They appeared completely sincere in their ministry, and were excellent musicians.

I used to be a bit of a skillet fan, but their music has changed over the years, and I haven't really kept up with them.

I've heard the Newsboys are excellent performers, and put on a great show. I find myself a bit annoyed at some of their lyrical content, however I've also heard that they are very serious about their ministry.

I'm not familiar with Eleventyseven

In my experience(this is, I believe, the most important part of my answer), music is about taste. Something I don't like may appeal greatly to someone else. This doesn't make my music better, or theirs worse. It just means that we look for different things when we listen to music or go to shows. Our tastes differ. I wish more people understood this, and were understanding or perhaps even appreciative of the differences they have with fans of other genres.

Thanks for sitting through this incredibly long, Five Iron Frenzy injected answer. :) Whatever music you prefer, enjoy it!
