Before myspace..?

How did local bands get any fans?

How did they promote? Advertise upcomming shows? How did people find out about them?

What was the local music scene BEFORE myspace?

Was it nothing? How did that work?

Before myspace..?

foot soldiers. they went around advertising bands, getting people to go to shows. and flyers, look at some of derek hess's work with band flyers.

Before myspace..?

At local record stores many bands would record short EP's that were available there so get famous locally and hopefully people would spread the word. Also theyd play shows in their local town wherever they could of small audiences and if you get famous that audience will get bigger.

Before myspace..?

I just went to the same venue every weekend. Saw some sh*tty bands, saw some amazing bands. Myspace is a blessing for bands and concert goers. I now know when any band I like within about 100 miles is playing and where.

Before myspace..?

In our area they would put up posters at local shops of all sorts. Coffee shops, music stores, independent stores of all type, local hang outs for younger people, etc. That would advertise their shows at local bars and clubs. People in my area love going to indie shows so they still do this. Usually 5 bucks to get in and listen to music from 8pm till 1am. Half the time it will be 5 or 6 bands. You can drink and have a great time. Usually at one the bands walk around and try and sell their EP's for 5 bucks. Most people buy them too! They usually also offer their EP's at local indie music stores half the time they give the EP's away for free.

But I live in Omaha, NE. Home of SaddleCreek records and bright eyes and such... So music is pretty big here. Indie music that is. So myspace still isn't the main stay.
